🏗️ Weirs Beach Arrow Sign turns 70!
Mark your calendars! The Weirs Action Committee will be celebrating the iconic sign's 70th anniversary with a celebration on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 9pm before the fireworks.
➡️ The Story Behind the Iconic Weirs Beach Arrow Sign
If your anything like me, the first place you went on Lake Winnipesaukee is Weirs Beach and you took a picture of the Arrow Sign. It's one of the most recognizable landmarks in New Hampshire's Lakes Region and has welcomed generations of visitors to Lake Winnipesaukee.
But there's much more to this landmark than meets the eye.
🏗️ A Lakes Region Icon Since 1956
- The original Weirs Beach Arrow Sign was erected on July 21, 1956.
- It was funded by a group of local business owners led by Sid Ames, who wanted to create a memorable entrance to Weirs Beach.
- The sign debuted around the same time the public beach was expanded through dredging, helping shape the Weirs Beach we know today.
💡 The Original Sign
- Construction cost approximately $2,000 in 1956.
- It originally featured a yellow sign with black support poles. The double-sided sign included nearly 200 feet of neon tubing and almost 700 animated chaser bulbs
- Even at night, it became an unforgettable landmark for families arriving at the lake.
🔨 A New Life for a Classic Landmark
- In 2002, the massive 4,400-pound sign underwent a complete restoration.
- It was relocated to the traffic island at the intersection of Lakeside Avenue and Route 3, where it stands today.
- The restored version features its familiar light blue, dark blue, and bright red arrow, preserving its vintage character while giving it a fresh new look.
❤️ Why Weirs Beach Continues to Capture Hearts
For me, Weirs Beach represents everything people love about the Lakes Region—a place where generations return year after year to create lifelong memories.
Here are just a few reasons it remains one of New Hampshire's most beloved destinations:
🐟 A Name Rooted in History
Long before vacationers arrived, the Pennacook people built wooden fish traps, called weirs, in the channel to catch spawning fish. That's where Weirs Beach gets its name.
🪨 Endicott Rock
One of New Hampshire's oldest historic treasures, this rock was inscribed in 1652 by surveyors marking the northern boundary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
🏍️ Home of Laconia Motorcycle Week
Since 1916, Weirs Beach has hosted the oldest motorcycle rally in the United States, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each June.
🎮 Funspot
Home to the world's largest arcade and the American Classic Arcade Museum, Funspot has entertained families for decades.
🚢 The M/S Mount Washington
One of the true icons of Lake Winnipesaukee, this historic cruise ship has been carrying passengers across the lake for generations and remains one of the best ways to experience the area's incredible scenery.
🚂 Classic New England Charm
Weirs Beach still offers experiences that have become increasingly rare:
· 🎥 A vintage drive-in movie theater
· 🚂 The historic Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad
· 🚶 The classic boardwalk along Lake Winnipesaukee
· 🍦 Ice cream stands, arcades, marinas, beaches, and family attractions that have welcomed visitors for generations
