Hiking Red Hill can be a rewarding adventure in any season with stunning views of Squam Lake and the White Mountains to the North and Lake Winnipesaukee and the Belknap Mountain Range to the South. At 3.5 miles round trip on the Red Hill (Fire Tower) Trail, this hike is a bit of a climb (1,286 ft. of elevation gain) to reach the summit at 2,030 feet but is well worth the effort.
The Red Hill Trail takes off from the trailhead off Red Hill Road in Moultonborough and passes historic remains of the Horne family homestead on the way to the summit. After a climb to the top of the fire tower for the best views, head down via the Cabin Trail (which rejoins the Red Hill Trail) to see a well-preserved rustic hunter’s cabin, as well as the remains of the Cook family homestead.
