Stonedam Island, Meredith NH
This island is a breathtaking 112-acre wildlife preserve protected by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. There is dock on the southeast shore, a beach, picnic areas, and a beautiful network of hiking trails. Boaters can use this dock situated at the Northeast end of the island (3 hour limit) and explore the trails on the island. There is a log cabin near this dock that dates to the mid-1800’s.
The island derived its name from an old stone causeway that at one time connected it to the mainland on Meredith Neck. The remains of the causeway are still visible when the water levels are low.
Today the waters around the old causeway are known as Sally's Gut. It is a notoriously difficult area to navigate. There is also a section roped off for nesting Loons on the North side of Stonedam island in Sally's Gut.
The primary point of access for boaters which is a dock (3 hour limit) at the Northeast of the island near the entrance to Sally’s Gut. There is also an area for kayakers and canoers on the Southwest side of the island with a picnic table. The Red Trail leads off from this point for hiking into the interior of the island.
There are trails on the island – Swamp Loop (less than a half mile leads from boat dock to swamp), Main Loop (less than a mile up near the “summit” of the island), and Long Loop Trail (just under 2 miles that goes over the ridge of the island and along its western shore between the boat dock and the kayak/canoe landing area).
Owned by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust along with Ragged (Tuftonboro), Five Mile(Meredith), and Blanchard (Moultonborough) Islands.
