Steamboat Island, Gilford NH
The island is connected to Birch Island and lies between Long and Bear Islands.
Steamboat and Birch are connected by a wooden bridge that is made of a rare type of wood called “Hornbeam Wood”.
There are 5 islands that are connected to other islands by a footbridge – Steamboat to Birch, South Dolly to Little Dolly, October Eve to Whaleback, Harvard to Unknown Island, and Loon Island #1 to small Unknown Island.
The steamboat “Belknap” sunk off Steamboat Island in 1841 while towing a raft of logs to a sawmill.
