Pitchwood Island, Meredith NH
It is located off Meredith Neck with tiny Welcome Island and Stonedam Islands to the east.
Spindle Point Light House is located at the very southernmost tip of Spindle Point on Meredith Neck. The lighthouse, a stone and wood structure that stands 40 feet above the lake, was erected in 1892. Its angular roof is quite unique and is rumored to be the inspiration of the witch’s hat seen in the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz”. Local lore credits an odd purpose to the stone tower. After enjoying a night of libations and frivolity at the Weirs, Colonel Charles Cummings would use the lighthouse to guide himself back to the rocky shoals of Spindle Point. In truth, the lighthouse was built by the colonel for either his daughter or his niece as an art studio.
