Keniston Island stands to the northeast and Alton bay to the south and west.
Big Barndoor Island is the tenth largest non-bridged island on the lake, one of 274 habitable islands.
The majority of the shoreline around Barndoor is rocky, however, some lots boast terrific natural sand.
The common area is surrounded by an old construction road which was used when the island was first developed. Residents have a work party each year to trim back brush on this road. Barndoor property owners enjoy the construction road now for walking, jogging, mountain biking, etc.
During the 1940's and 1950's, Ralph Carpenter, who was the Director of N.H. Fish and Game at the time, owned the entire island and had cows on the island for fresh milk. Ralph built a great barn for them on the south side of the island which is still there today. When Barndoor was developed, the barn was sold and modified for a summer home. The new owners appreciated the labor and love that went into the original construction and incorporated many of the original features in their renovating.
